ProAviator iPad mounts: yoke, window, and kneeboard options

A comparison of FlightPro’s mounting configurations, tablet holders, and the fit checks that matter before buying.

The three-piece mounting system

A tablet mount has three separate jobs: the base attaches to the aircraft or your leg, the arm positions the screen, and the holder retains the device. Changing the base can make the same tablet easier to use in another cockpit, but the assembled mount still needs to fit that aircraft.

FlightPro sells the ProAviator system as individual mounts and a three-in-one set containing a yoke clamp, suction mount, and kneeboard strap. The set’s product page specifies a spring-loaded holder for tablets with advertised screen sizes of 7 to 12.9 inches and ball joints for adjustment. Screen diagonal alone does not establish fit: confirm the tablet’s dimensions with its case installed and the holder’s usable opening before ordering.

The bundle is worth considering when you regularly need more than one mounting position. For a single aircraft with an established mounting location, buying the appropriate base and holder may be sufficient. Compare the actual included parts before treating a bundle as a saving.

Yoke mounting: check the entire control movement

FlightPro offers a clamp-mounted ProAviator holder and lists different control-column geometries in its fit guidance. An aircraft name in a compatibility list is not enough to select the correct clamp. A cylindrical shaft, a bow-style yoke, and a throw-over control arm present different attachment surfaces. Send the seller the aircraft model and a photograph of the proposed attachment point if the required configuration is unclear.

With the aircraft secured and the engine off, evaluate the complete assembly at the normal seat position. Check clearance through full permitted control travel using the aircraft’s procedures. Include the tablet, case, arm, clamp, and charging cable. A position that clears the panel with the yoke centered may interfere when it moves forward or rotates.

This ground check addresses physical interference; it does not establish installation approval or demonstrate flight-control compatibility. Yoke mounting also adds mass to a flight control, which warrants more scrutiny than attaching equipment to a stationary surface.

Suction mounting: surface and sightline

The separate suction-mount listing describes attachment to a smooth surface. That describes the attachment method, not permission to attach it to every window or interior surface. Confirm the aircraft surface and the mount manufacturer’s instructions before using it.

Evaluate the tablet’s position from the seated eye point. Include the space occupied by the arm and the charging lead, rather than checking the screen alone. An unobstructed view of the tablet does not establish an unobstructed view outside. Leave access to window latches and other nearby controls.

Do not use the advertised attachment method as evidence of retention under a particular temperature, vibration, or turbulence condition. This article has no independent retention-test results for the ProAviator suction mount.

Kneeboard mounting: evaluate it while seated

FlightPro’s ProAviator kneeboard has an adjustable tablet position; its listing specifies 360-degree rotation and up to 90 degrees of tilt. Those adjustments can change the screen angle without attaching the tablet to the control column.

Check the assembly with the seat adjusted, restraints fastened, and feet on the pedals. Confirm that the tablet and holder leave room for the required control movements. Evaluate whether reading the display requires a prolonged downward glance and whether the device remains usable in the intended portrait or landscape orientation. A comfortable position standing beside the aircraft is not a useful fit assessment.

The kneeboard is a separate mounting option, not an automatic solution to every cockpit clearance problem. Tablet size and the available space between the pilot and the controls still determine suitability.

Spring-loaded and magnetic holders

The three-in-one set lists a spring-loaded holder. FlightPro also sells a separate magnetic yoke mount. Do not assume the magnetic holder is included in the spring-loaded bundle or that both use the same device-retention hardware.

For the spring-loaded configuration, verify contact with the tablet or case and access to buttons and charging ports. For the magnetic configuration, obtain the exact attachment instructions for your device and case, including any required plate or adapter. The product page advertises magnetic pull force, but that number alone does not establish retention of your assembled tablet in flight. We have not independently tested that claim.

Choose the retention method after confirming the complete parts list. A description such as universal or magnetic does not resolve case compatibility, attachment preparation, or the effect of a nearby magnet on other equipment.

Aircraft compatibility and FAA guidance

FAA AC 20-173 addresses installed EFB components. Its mounting guidance considers access to controls and displays, external visibility, and entry and exit. It specifically identifies the combined mount-and-device mass and dimensions as possible concerns when equipment is attached to a yoke. A seller’s aircraft compatibility list does not establish compliance with that guidance or approval for your aircraft.

For an installed mounting arrangement, review the applicable aircraft documentation and approval basis with appropriately qualified maintenance personnel. Do not infer that an attachment is approved merely because it can be fitted without tools.

Before placing an order

AC 91-78A provides Part 91 EFB guidance, including assessment of placement, lighting, workload, and system failures. It distinguishes portable and installed arrangements and directs readers to installation guidance where applicable. Selecting a holder is only one part of preparing an EFB for use.

Use the following purchase checklist to get a specific configuration confirmed by the seller. The product links below lead to FlightPro’s listings for current specifications and availability.

  • Record the tablet model, case dimensions, and total device-and-case weight.
  • Identify the exact base, arm, holder, and any adapters included in the order.
  • Confirm the proposed attachment surface or control-column geometry.
  • Check screen visibility, access to controls, charging-cable routing, and exit clearance.
  • Confirm the applicable installation requirements and the seller’s return conditions before fitting or flying with the equipment.
