Certificate and training requirements

The ordinary Part 61 commercial airplane applicant must be at least 18, meet the English-language requirement, and hold at least a private pilot certificate issued under Part 61 or meet the specified alternative. Section 61.123 also requires the applicable training, endorsements, knowledge test and practical test. A total-time number does not establish eligibility on its own. The instructor must review the kind of time logged, aircraft class, training subjects and required flights.

For the single-engine airplane route, §61.129(a) normally requires 250 hours as a pilot, including 100 in powered aircraft with 50 in airplanes. The 100 hours of PIC experience must include 50 in airplanes and 50 cross-country, with at least 10 of the cross-country hours in airplanes. These are overlapping categories. A qualifying airplane cross-country flown as PIC may satisfy several lines in the experience audit, but a flight that does not meet the applicable cross-country definition cannot be reclassified simply to reach a total.

Required instruction

The 20-hour training requirement includes ten hours of instrument training in the specified subjects, of which at least five must be in a single-engine airplane. It also includes ten hours in a complex, turbine-powered or qualifying technically advanced airplane, or a permitted combination. A TAA must meet §61.129(j); a tablet and a basic autopilot do not by themselves make the aircraft qualify. Prior instrument-rating instruction may meet a commercial requirement when the actual instruction and its record establish the required subjects; holding an instrument rating alone does not document those entries.

The required training flights include a two-hour daytime and a two-hour nighttime single-engine cross-country, each meeting the more-than-100-NM straight-line requirement from the original departure point. Three hours of practical-test preparation in a single-engine airplane must fall within the preceding two calendar months. Identify the actual qualifying flights rather than attaching a general statement to a logbook total.

Solo or duties-of-PIC experience

Section 61.129(a)(4) provides a ten-hour solo route or a ten-hour route performing PIC duties with an authorized instructor aboard. The required experience includes a cross-country of at least 300 NM total with landings at three points and one point at least 250 NM straight-line from departure; the Hawaii exception changes the longest-segment requirement. It also includes five hours of night VFR with ten takeoffs and ten landings, each involving a traffic pattern, at an airport with an operating control tower.

Do not treat an ordinary dual lesson as duties-of-PIC time. Record the chosen route accurately and have the instructor resolve whether the complete experience complies before booking the test. Part 141 graduation and authorized device credit have their own provisions; this lesson describes the ordinary Part 61 ASEL path, not every alternative.

The application audit

Match the logbook, knowledge-test report, endorsements and IACRA application. A knowledge-test pass normally remains usable for the practical test for 24 calendar months under §61.39, subject to applicable exceptions. The practical-test recommendation and required recent preparation must also be current.
